One of the names that has appeared in transfer window after transfer window is Kenny McLean.

The former St Mirren and Aberdeen midfielder, who has recently established himself as a Scotland first XI regular after years on the bench, has frequently been linked to Rangers.

In the summer transfer window, a move to Ibrox eventually appeared all but imminent, but he chose to remain at Norwich after earning their player of the year award for the 2023–24 campaign.

It might yet happen, though, as the 32-year-old is a devoted Bluenose and has publicly stated that he hopes to play for the team someday.

Rangers’ Kenny McLean: “no secret”

McLean’s contract with the Canaries is set to expire in 2026, which means he will be 34 years old. Additionally, they retain the option for one additional year.

That seems to reduce the likelihood that the former Gers academy player will ever return to the team he loves.

However, Barry Ferguson believes it is common knowledge that he will eventually don the Rangers’ blue.

“He’s learnt a lot since his younger days at St Mirren before going to Aberdeen,” Fergie stated during an interview with the Go Radio Football Show.

“I believe that since travelling to England, he has advanced significantly.

When asked if he believes McLean will play for the Rangers in the future, he responded, “There’s no secret of that.”

“There was a lot of discussion during the summer, and I brought up the fact that Rangers need expertise in that area of the pitch.

“He stood out, especially in Scotland’s last two games.”

McLean’s remarks regarding playing for the Rangers

In 2021, McLean said the Athletic, “I would be lying if I said it wasn’t something I’d want to do.” “Playing for your boyhood team is what you want to do when you’re younger. I’m not thinking about it right now because I’m going to play in the Premier League once more.

But it would be very significant for my family and me. As a child in Glasgow, you support Rangers or Celtic and you want to play for one of them. I grew up as a Rangers supporter and used to go to games with my dad. I was therefore in a better position.

In the summer, it appeared like his fantasy might come true, but it never happened.

However, how close was he to joining Rangers and Philippe Clement?

“I don’t think that I need to speak too much on it, to be honest, in terms of whether it’s true or not,” McLean told the Norwich Evening News when questioned about it in the summer. I’m not even impacted by it.

“I want to be here, I am here, and I will remain here. Oxford is something I’m excited about.

“For the next few years, I’ll maintain the positive relationship I’ve always had with the fans. I’m hoping [the contract] says a lot.

“Last year, when there was discussion and I pledged my future to the football team, it was quite similar. I was also committed by the football team. Why that would alter is beyond me.
