Rangers Set to Land ‘Fantastic’ Star Luuk de Jong After PSV Exit

Glasgow, July 8, 2025 — Rangers FC are on the brink of pulling off a sensational coup in the transfer market as they close in on the signing of former Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven striker Luuk de Jong. The 34-year-old Dutch international has reportedly turned down a contract extension with PSV, making him a free agent — and Ibrox looks to be his next destination.

De Jong, who boasts a remarkable career that includes stints at Sevilla, Newcastle, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and most notably Barcelona, is said to be eager for one final challenge. Sources close to the player suggest that the allure of playing in front of the Ibrox faithful and helping Rangers push for domestic dominance and European progress has swayed his decision.

Nicknamed the “Fantastic Finisher” during his peak years in the Eredivisie, de Jong scored over 160 goals in two spells with PSV, winning multiple league titles and earning a reputation as a lethal presence in the air. His strength, experience, and natural leadership qualities could prove invaluable to a Rangers side looking to regain the Scottish Premiership title from bitter rivals Celtic.

The Light Blues have been extremely active in this summer’s transfer window, with the club’s ownership group — spearheaded by the ambitious 49ers Enterprises — backing manager Russell Martin in his quest to rebuild a winning squad. The signing of Luuk de Jong, however, would represent arguably the most high-profile and symbolic deal of the summer, signaling the club’s intent to bring seasoned international class back to Govan.

A source inside Ibrox told reporters:

“Luuk is a player the staff have admired for a long time. He brings goals, yes, but also a mentality and professionalism that’s contagious. He’s been around some of Europe’s top clubs and still has a lot to offer. Talks have progressed well, and there’s optimism that a deal can be announced in the coming days.”

De Jong’s potential arrival could also play a vital mentoring role for younger forwards at the club, including Thelo Aasgaard and Danilo, who are expected to be central to the team’s attacking plans this season.

Although some questioned the club’s strategy of targeting players in their thirties, Martin defended the policy in a recent press conference, stating:

“Age isn’t the focus — quality is. Luuk de Jong is a fantastic footballer with top-level experience. If we have the chance to bring him in, it’s a no-brainer.”

If confirmed, de Jong would become the latest marquee addition to a revitalized Rangers squad that has already seen the likes of Thelo Aasgaard, Nasser Djiga, and Joe Rothwell join in recent weeks. His unveiling could take place as early as next week, potentially in time for the club’s preseason showdown with Club Brugge.

With the new season fast approaching, fans will be eager to see if de Jong’s veteran touch can help propel Rangers to silverware — and perhaps even another famous European run.
