Portsmouth FC Should Rival Rangers for Transfer Reunion With Attacker Still Loved at Fratton Park

Portsmouth FC are in the midst of an exciting return to the Championship, and with momentum building, the club should look no further than a familiar face to bolster their attacking options. Reports linking Rangers FC with a move for former Pompey fan-favourite Jamal Lowe should act as a wake-up call for the Fratton Park hierarchy—Portsmouth must consider a serious bid of their own to rival the Scottish giants.

Jamal Lowe, currently on the books at AFC Bournemouth, spent last season on loan at Swansea City, where he delivered solid performances and reminded everyone of his Championship pedigree. With Bournemouth likely to offload several fringe players this summer, Lowe is reportedly available for transfer—and Portsmouth should pounce.

The 29-year-old attacker is still fondly remembered on the south coast for his explosive performances between 2017 and 2019, where he scored 29 goals in over 100 appearances and played a pivotal role in Portsmouth’s EFL Trophy success and promotion from League Two. His chemistry with the fans was evident, and even now, chants of “Super Jamal Lowe” are still echoed in conversations around Fratton Park.

Rangers FC, under manager Philippe Clement, are keen to add depth and experience to their wide attacking options, especially after missing out on key targets earlier in the window. Their financial muscle and stature could tempt Lowe with European football and the opportunity to play in front of 50,000 fans at Ibrox. But that doesn’t mean Portsmouth are out of the race.

The key for Pompey would be to leverage sentiment, opportunity, and playing time. Lowe knows what it’s like to wear the blue shirt with pride. He was nurtured at Fratton Park and became a household name during his stint. The emotional draw of returning to a club where he is adored, coupled with the prospect of leading a promotion charge in the Championship, could tip the scales in Portsmouth’s favour.

John Mousinho’s men have shown ambition already this summer with a series of smart additions, and Lowe’s experience, versatility, and goal-scoring instinct would add a lethal dimension to their attacking third. Whether used as a winger, a second striker, or even as a central forward, Lowe would offer Portsmouth a dynamic threat and a reliable outlet in big moments.

Moreover, his presence in the dressing room could provide inspiration to the younger talents emerging through the ranks. Having a player who understands the Portsmouth culture and has navigated the Championship would be invaluable.

While Rangers may be able to offer a more immediate shot at silverware, Portsmouth offer something just as appealing—unfinished business, a deep connection, and the chance to be part of a potentially historic return to the Premier League in the coming years.

If Pompey are serious about building a team capable of competing at the top end of the Championship, they should make their move swiftly. A reunion with Jamal Lowe would not only strengthen their squad—it would electrify the fanbase and signal their true intent.
