Rangers have made an impressive start to the summer transfer window, and new manager Russell Martin is set for his first major test when his side faces Panathinaikos in a Champions League qualifier on Tuesday, 22 July.

Martin’s eight new signings are all in contention to feature in the crucial clash, which could see pressure mount on the boss if the result doesn’t go Rangers’ way.

One of the standout additions, young centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez, could be handed his first competitive start at Ibrox. The £3.5 million signing from Peterborough United has already caught the eye, with Sky Sports pundit and Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth backing him to thrive in Glasgow.

Speaking to the Daily Record (20 July), Ainsworth said: “The timing of Manny’s move to Rangers is spot on. He has what it takes to succeed at a club like this. He’s composed and mentally strong—nothing seems to rattle him.

“His experience under Darren Ferguson at Peterborough has prepared him well. You need personality to work under Darren. Manny’s got it.”

Ainsworth revealed he once had Fernandez on trial at Wycombe when the defender was just 16 and admitted he regretted not signing him then, though he’s happy to see the player doing well now.

Fernandez’s emergence could have implications for Ben Davies, whose position at Ibrox already looked shaky following Martin’s defensive overhaul. Should Fernandez continue his strong form—as seen in the recent 2-2 draw with Club Brugge—it may accelerate Davies’ exit.

With players like Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane absent during preseason and linked with moves away, Rangers appear set for further departures in the coming weeks.
