When Norwich City revealed that they had signed Adam Forshaw in the summer of 2023, there would have been a mix of elation and anxiety.

Up to that point in his career, the midfielder had established himself as a vital member of numerous successful EFL teams, garnering a lot of praise for his performances for Leeds United, Brentford, and Middlesbrough.

He was the kind of player every team needed to keep possession moving with his metronomic passing technique in the middle of the park, but he was also not scared to put in a quick goal when out of possession.

However, there were many questions about whether he was still the player who had been a mainstay in the top two divisions for the previous ten or so years after he emerged from more than two years of injury hell at Elland Road. As he moved to Carrow Road, those questions would resurface.

Adam Forshaw hopes to make a fresh start at Norwich City following his injury problems at Leeds United.
Because of the severity of his injury problems at the time, Forshaw was unsure if he would ever play professional football again four years prior to moving to Norfolk.

Forshaw, who had been a mainstay at Elland Road in his early years with the team, would endure nearly two years without playing, his body in excruciating pain as doctors struggled to figure out how to restore him to full strength.

Forshaw was inactive from September 2019 to August 2021, although he recovered and resumed playing during Leeds’ final two Premier League seasons before to their relegation at the end of the 2022–2023 season.

His contract at Elland Road ended as a result, and Norwich quickly approached. The Canaries also had plans to return to the top flight, and it was believed that the midfielder’s knowledge would be useful in the engine room, as it had been in the past.

That didn’t quite work out, though, as Forshaw only started two league games during his tenure at Carrow Road due to David Wagner’s refusal to employ him and a hamstring injury sustained in November that hindered his ability to play in the first team.

Adam Forshaw’s career at Norwich City ends abruptly as Plymouth Argyle pounces

The midfield player was back out the door a few months after he came because injuries were returning and he wanted to enjoy every second of his football career after going through a lonely existence while on the sidelines.

His confidence with the ball proved crucial in the second half of the season, and Plymouth Argyle were more than delighted to take the seasoned player off their hands to improve their situation at the bottom of the Championship.

Forshaw told the Athletic, “The summer ended up being quite long and frustrating,” when he explained his choice to leave Norfolk. I went on a free transfer and didn’t sign with Norwich until the fourth game of the season.

I was living away from my family, catching up, and missing the entire preseason with the club. It’s a great club, and I really enjoyed the people there, but I was so far from home and wasn’t playing much that I decided to leave in January after talking to Plymouth.

“The decision was made because I want to enjoy football as much as possible at my age and if I’m living away from my family, I want to play as much as I can.”

It’s debatable if the departure from Carrow Road was too abrupt, but Forshaw and Norwich appeared to realise early on that it wasn’t a good fit and decided to end things amicably and part ways.

Signing a player who has previously experienced injury issues was somewhat of a risk, but since the player is moving on so fast, the Canaries won’t look back on the move with regret, and both parties will quickly wash their hands of a botched move.
