Although Fatawu has been used infrequently in the last few games, the Leicester City boss has not yet started both of the starting wingers from last season together.
Questions about selection concerning Leicester City’s wingers should center on Stephy Mavididi’s inclusion rather than Abdul Fatawu’s exclusion, according to manager Steve Cooper.
The regular wide players from last season haven’t played together yet in the Premier League; Mavididi has begun in the starting lineup for the last four games, while Fatawu has started the first three.
Cooper has preferred a winger who can play as an attacking midfielder, and the other wide place has been occupied by either Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Jordan Ayew, or Facundo Buonanotte.
Fans of City are eager for the wide combination from last season to play together again, and while they questioned Mavididi’s absence in the first few weeks of the season, there are now cries for Fatawu to reclaim his spot. Although Fatawu has started every game in which he has been substituted, he has not played much lately. Against Everton and Arsenal, he came in as extra time was approaching, and against Bournemouth, he played the last ten minutes or so. Cooper views Fatawu’s exclusion as a typical aspect of fielding a competitive team. The Ghanaian isn’t doing anything improper; rather, Mavididi has been performing well.
Cooper stated last week, prior to City’s victory over Bournemouth, “That question could be for anybody who doesn’t start.” “We are a team. Everyone is putting up a lot of effort in their task. There are players that will complete and a team that will start. It was Stephy three or four games ago. It’s Abdul now. It might be McAteer’s Kasey. I recognise that this is a typical question to ask. However, Stephy should be the subject of the inquiry rather than Abdul. It will be someone different next week. “What I do know is that there is a group of people who are training extremely hard and competing for the jersey. We have the numbers we do, but certain guys deserve more opportunities than they have had.
“We’re attempting to handle everything constructively. The guys are prioritising the team by acting in that way. Regardless of everything else, it is what we shall continue with.
Abdul is a tremendously promising young athlete with a great future ahead of him. He is also a pleasant youngster with a positive attitude and an exciting game. To become the player he aspires to be, he will experience periods of success similar to those he had in the Championship last year, as well as times when he will need to step up and perform.
That is typical. With three goals this season, Mavididi leads City in scoring in all competitions, although Fatawu has only assisted one goal thus far, setting up Jamie Vardy’s equaliser in the first game versus Tottenham.
Fatawu and Mavididi combined for 20 goals and 19 assists last season, with Fatawu one goal behind.
