According to the Daily Mail, Nathan Patterson will not be rejoining Rangers on loan from Everton during the January transfer window.

The news outlet’s website [28 November] states that Everton would not entertain proposals from north of the border, but they will consider authorising a loan move for the full-back for the second half of the season.

The 23-year-old was rumoured to make a temporary return to Ibrox in order to allay the mounting concerns at right-back. He signed a £12 million initial contract with the Merseyside team in January 2022 [Sky Sports].

But if the Gers academy graduate is permitted to leave Goodison Park, it will probably be to another English team in an attempt to jump-start his faltering career.

Philippe Clement needs to look for other Rangers targets.

All season long, Clement has been worried about the right-back situation in Glasgow, and it seems the Belgian is ready to step up, at least for however long he has left at Rangers.

After a precipitous decline this season, James Tavernier has finally lost favour at Ibrox. He has paid the price for a run of subpar performances and is on the verge of leaving.

As a result, after playing a variety of positions on the pitch for the majority of his career, Dujon Sterling has been given the reins in Glasgow and is now thought to be Tavernier’s long-term successor.

However, if Rangers advance to the knockout stages, there won’t be enough depth to support Sterling after Tavernier leaves Glasgow. Neraysho Kasanwirjo is expected to undergo surgery for a foot injury and miss a significant amount of time due to injury.

In the midst of a dismal and hopeless campaign in Scotland, Patterson’s return to Ibrox after three years of being ignored at Everton would have been the ideal romantic tale for the fans to cheer them up, but sadly, it is not to be.

Supporters can find comfort in the fact that Rangers intend to bolster their roster in the upcoming transfer window in order to make amends for the season. However, since Patterson’s return is now ruled out, it remains to be seen who will be targeted and whether Nils Koppen can persuade anyone who can improve the team to move to Ibrox.
