If Rangers decide to sign Lawrence Shankland during the transfer window, Keith Jackson thinks they will be preparing for a “hard sale.”
Throughout the summer, the Gers were constantly linked to the Scottish talisman, but a deal never materialised.
Journalist Jackson discussed past discussions between the parties during an appearance on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live on December 1st, although he stated that a relocation does not appear possible at this time.
The Rangers were having serious talks behind the scenes before deciding not to pursue Lawrence Shankland, he stated, despite all the hype about it.
Hearts supporters are unfairly examining it and saying, ‘does this guy even want to be here anymore?’ I believe there was an understanding with Lawrence Shankland and his camp that something might be there.
“There’s no guarantee that that deal will go through right now because Rangers already have strikers who don’t score goals, and if they went for Lawrence Shankland when he’s really struggling, it might be difficult to convince their fans.”
Rangers can’t afford to sign Lawrence Shankland in error.
Rangers supporters may have only wanted to get Shankland in the summer, but based on his performance this year, it appears that they have gotten off lucky.
This season, the striker has only managed one goal in all competitions and has likely been playing at a lower level than Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers.
The Gers would probably be able to acquire Shankland at a discounted price if they were interested in him because his contract is slated to expire at the end of the current campaign.
However, right now, it doesn’t seem like the danger of investing money on the 29-year-old is worth it.
Jackson’s statement that his move would be a “hard sale” is not particularly surprising given that the Gers already have three strikers who are not performing up to par.
Clement could spend his money on a lot of other players who would probably perform significantly better than the Scotsman right now.
