According to sources who spoke with Football Insider in January, Rangers will want to bolster their alternatives for defensive midfield.

In an interview with senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke for Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, manager Philippe Clement, 50, stated that he thinks Rangers lack depth in defensive midfield and would like to add a powerhouse player, but he acknowledges that it will be difficult given the club’s financial circumstances.

The only midfielders currently available to the Belgian boss who loves to play two defensively minded players to protect the back line are Mohamed Diomande and Nicolas Raskin.

With two assists in 393 league minutes, seven open-play opportunities, and an 84% pass accuracy percentage, Diomande has shown to be the more outstanding of the two.

In order to close the gap on unbeaten teams Aberdeen and Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premier League, Rangers is rumoured to be searching for a low-cost move to strengthen depth.

Rangers want to sign a defensive midfielder in January.

Rangers will have an opportunity to close the gap on the top two when Celtic and Aberdeen play at Parkhead on Saturday, October 19, following the international break.

The most successful club in Scotland is still five points behind the top two, who have both won all seven of their Scottish Premier League games.

After losing to Kilmarnock in the Old Firm earlier in the season, Clement’s team will be looking to build on their three-game winning streak when they visit the team in ninth place.

Rangers may be ready to rekindle their interest in Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland in order to bolster their roster beyond defensive midfield.
