Jim Goodwin expressed his delight at giving Dundee United fans something to celebrate this Christmas, while also quieting his Celtic-supporting family and friends in the away section at Tannadice.
The goalless draw against the reigning champions solidifies United’s position in fifth place and marks a significant achievement, having drawn against both Old Firm teams this season. Goodwin dismissed any excuses for Celtic’s performance, despite the absence of key players like Nicolas Kuhn and Cameron Carter-Vickers.
Reflecting on the game, Goodwin, who started his career at Celtic two decades ago, said: “There were far too many people connected to me in the opposition end, so I’m relieved my phone won’t be buzzing with them gloating about a big win over us.”
He added: “This result allows us to enjoy Christmas. Our fans were incredible once again, showing up in great numbers, and I hope they can enjoy the holidays too.”
Goodwin acknowledged Celtic’s squad depth and the challenges posed by the conditions but emphasized that Dundee United faced the same obstacles. “Credit must go to our players for their efforts. We were missing key players too, but everyone gave their all,” he said.
The manager admitted the six minutes of added time felt interminable as United faced relentless pressure, with goalkeeper Jack Walton making crucial saves. He praised his team for their focus and resilience, especially against Celtic’s late attacking reinforcements.
“There were some tense goalmouth scrambles, but we also had a few half-chances ourselves. Had luck been on our side, we might have snatched a win,” Goodwin concluded.
The result ensures a positive end to the year for Dundee United, while leaving Celtic frustrated in their quest for a victory.
