Norwich City are reportedly eyeing a move for Norwegian goalkeeper Egil Selvik during the January transfer window.

According to Alan Nixon via his Patreon account, the 27-year-old could be on his way to Carrow Road, as his contract with Norwegian club FK Haugesund is set to expire following the conclusion of their season earlier this month.

Negotiations over a new deal for Norwich’s current first-choice goalkeeper, Angus Gunn, appear to have stalled, increasing the likelihood of his departure, possibly as early as January. Reports suggest that head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup has turned his attention to Selvik as a potential replacement.

With Selvik’s contract running out at the end of 2024, a move to England seems inevitable. The goalkeeper recently confirmed his impending departure from Haugesund amid interest from an unnamed Championship club, which Nixon believes to be Norwich.

Norwich fans share thoughts on Selvik links amid Gunn uncertainty

Norwich City fan pundit Zeke Downes shared his views on the club’s reported interest in Selvik, highlighting concerns about Gunn’s future and the need for a reliable goalkeeper. Downes commented:

“I’m not surprised we’re being linked with a new ‘keeper. It looks like Gunn won’t be offered a new contract. Even if he was, I’ve never been completely sold on him. He was good last season, but this year his form has dipped. George Long hasn’t impressed either, and there’s no real competition for Gunn. When Tim Krul was here, there was at least some pressure on him. I expect we’ll bring in another goalkeeper, whether that’s now or at the end of the season.”

Resolving Norwich’s goalkeeper situation

Norwich’s goalkeeping issues have been a challenge this season. George Long struggled during Gunn’s injury absence, and young Archie Mair has yet to play beyond League Two. Bringing in Selvik could provide much-needed stability and defensive leadership.

While Gunn’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, Hoff Thorup indicated in October that discussions remain “ongoing.” However, Norwich need immediate solutions to bolster their defensive consistency, and Selvik—who is younger than Gunn and could potentially join on a free transfer—represents a cost-effective option to address these concerns.
