Peyton Manning believes that in recent years, a number of NFL teams, notably the Carolina Panthers, have failed their young quarterbacks.

Manning stated that the fact that Panthers quarterback Bryce Young is already on his third playcaller in two seasons “bothers” him during an appearance on the “This is Football” podcast. Manning views that as a failure on the Panthers’ behalf and is concerned that Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears are taking the same course.

“I find it annoying that Bryce Young, who has only played for two seasons, is now on his third playcaller. Sometime in September of next year, Caleb Williams will be on his third playcaller. That seems like a miss to me,” Manning remarked. “Well, who is going to be the head coach if we draft this guy? This is the system that we will use, coordinator. I want the person taking the coordinator’s place to shadow him around the clock if he leaves to pursue a position as head coach. So the quarterback doesn’t have to pick up a new system every year, I want them there all the time.

In four years, Baker Mayfield probably had to master five different systems. Six systems in six years, Alex Smith. Throughout his career, Tom Brady used the same system. I spent my first 14 years in Indianapolis under the same system.

Under first-year head coach Dave Canales, Young finally appeared to get it together towards the conclusion of the season, so things are going well there. Though he normally wants to be challenged, Williams has stated publicly that he would like to see the Bears hire an offensive coach. Presumably, some steadiness would also be beneficial.

Manning’s critique isn’t very novel. Some organisations would undoubtedly do well to take heed of Manning’s insight, but it will also likely be ignored because they continue to make quick changes when things don’t go as planned.
