Rangers could have used the addition of one or two players to their roster for the trip to Old Trafford to play Manchester United.
Even if the fixtures are still scheduled during a transfer window, Philippe Clement will have to make do with what he has because the manager is unlikely to be very thrilled about the Europa League constraints.
In the midst of a center-half crisis, Rafael Fernandes joined Rangers, with a Bosnian source indicating Nikola Katic might be the next to join.
In the midst of Rangers rumours, Zurich accepted losing Nikola Katic.
In response to a specific query regarding the rumours that Katic might return to Rangers and make “contact” at Ibrox, FC Zurich sports director Milos Malenovic stated that he is willing to let the six-time capped international defender go:
That, in my opinion, is very understandable. Indeed, many players in Switzerland do not end up here,” reflected a disgruntled Malenovic.
That makes sense, in my opinion. In the summer, we assured him (Katic) that he would have the opportunity to relocate in the winter instead of the summer.
Since then, Zurich manager Ricardo Moniz has made hints via Reprezentacija that Katic is anticipating something specific:
He is really particular. One of his weaknesses is that he doesn’t train, and his time is running out.
Could a deal be imminent? Katic has made it clear that he wants to rejoin the Rangers.
Because Leon Balogun and Robin Propper have only recently resumed training, Clinton Nsiala is out, and Fernandes isn’t healthy enough to play or be included in the team, the issue versus Manchester United is temporary.
When you combine this with John Souttar’s chronic injury and Neraysho Kasanwirjo’s return to Feyenoord, Clement is left without a fully healthy central defender save Leon King, who has played primarily in midfield for the past two years.
If Katic joined Rangers, who would he replace?
Given his style of play, Katic would be a clear successor for the elderly Balogun should Rangers decide to sign him.
His body isn’t quite as strong as it used to be, but he is one player whose skill has never been questioned.
Rangers don’t really have a physical presence in either box when he’s not available, aside from the seasoned Nigerian international.
Although Fernandes and he share a similar physical profile and style, experience can occasionally be a stronger advantage at center-half than skill or speed.
Even though his comeback may come a week or two too late, Katic has hardly missed a game since leaving Rangers and might once again be a valuable member of the team.
