Sunderland appear increasingly likely to lose out to their Championship rivals in the race for Tom Cannon, dealing the club a second transfer setback in just two days.

The Black Cats have long been interested in the former Everton striker, submitting multiple bids for him last summer that were ultimately rejected before he joined Sole City on loan. Cannon was recently recalled by Leicester City, who are now reportedly close to finalizing a £10 million deal with Sheffield United.

According to Sky Sports, “Sheffield United have agreed a £10 million deal with Leicester to sign Tom Cannon. Personal terms are still under discussion and have not yet been finalized. However, a medical is scheduled for tomorrow. Cannon was recalled from a loan at Stoke so that Leicester could facilitate his sale.”

The report adds that Leicester’s transfer decisions are heavily influenced by PSR considerations, with the club expected to focus on loan signings if they bring in any reinforcements this month.

Sunderland had hoped to structure a deal similar to the one that secured Enzo Le Fée, where a permanent move would only be triggered if the club achieved Premier League promotion. However, it now seems likely they will need to explore other options for strengthening their attack. Westerlo forward Matija Frigan has been heavily linked with a potential move to Wearside this week.

This latest setback follows news that Sunderland target Ben Brereton Diaz has chosen to join Sheffield United instead. The Chilean forward cited familiarity as a key factor in his decision to return to the Steel City, despite interest from other Championship clubs.
