After Celtic informed the South American team how much they want to recover on the defender, Alexandro Bernabei’s permanent move to Internacional may have encountered a significant obstacle.
The Hoops have set a high asking price for the player, who is presently out on loan until the end of the year.
In 2022, when then-manager Ange Postecoglou wanted to expand his defensive options and give mainstay Greg Taylor more competition, the Hoops paid over £4 million to recruit the Argentine left-back from Lanus in his native country.
However, the 24-year-old was unable to make a claim to be a fixture in the first squad due to the Scotland international’s form and Bernabei’s off-field disciplinary concerns.
After signing on a season-long loan with Brazilian team Internacional, the Parkhead enigma made his way back across the Atlantic in March. Bernabei’s career has also taken a turn for the better as a result of the move; according to reports, the club is interested in keeping him on a permanent basis once his temporary stint ends in December because of his strong play.
Since then, though, it has become apparent that there might be a significant obstacle for Internacional to overcome. Porto do Colorado claims that although the Scottish champions are prepared to trade Bernabei in order to reduce their payroll, Brendan Rodgers’ team is requesting a transfer fee that is too high for their rivals.
According to a recent source, Bernabei is eager to stay in Brazil so that he can participate in the Copa Libertadores with his loan club, and Internacional is hoping to “acquire” him. Celtic is reportedly seeking about €10 million (£8.32 million). It is believed that Internacional would consider extending Bernabei’s loan agreement until 2025 if the two teams are unable to come to an agreement.
After finding other options and signing Alex Valle on loan from La Liga powerhouse Barcelona in the summer, Hoops manager Rodgers has previously stated that he would be pleased to let go of Bernabei, who was used just nine times.
