Sunderland Player Receives Unfair Criticism After Watford Draw, Says Journalist

A Sunderland player has come under unjustified scrutiny following the draw against Watford, according to a Black Cats journalist.

Sunderland were once again held to a draw at the Stadium of Light, this time against a struggling Watford side managed by Tom Cleverley.

Luke O’Nien gave the hosts the lead after being set up brilliantly by Trai Hume from a set-piece, but Watford turned the game around with a penalty and a stunning goal early in the second half.

Regis Le Bris’ tactics have been questioned once more for being overly defensive, with some feeling he should have introduced more attacking players.

Alongside Le Bris, several Sunderland players faced criticism from fans for underwhelming performances. However, one journalist has stepped in to defend a player he believes was unfairly targeted.

Michael Graham Backs Ian Poveda After Substitute Appearance

With an hour played, Le Bris introduced Ian Poveda in search of inspiration, despite the winger struggling for game time this season due to persistent injuries in his debut campaign on Wearside.

Poveda had little impact in his 30-minute cameo, with Sunderland’s late equalizer coming from a combination between Wilson Isidor and Dennis Cirkin.

Despite his limited influence, journalist Michael Graham defended Poveda on social media platform X, stating: “Bit surprised to see Ian Poveda getting criticism today. Thought he was perfectly decent when he came on. Opinions, I suppose.”

Poveda Needs Time to Find His Rhythm

Although Poveda has significant Championship experience, injuries have frequently disrupted his career, limiting his playing time.

This season has followed a similar pattern to his 2023/24 campaign with Sheffield Wednesday, where fitness setbacks hampered his progress.

Given his history, Poveda will need time to regain full match sharpness. While his impact against Watford was minimal, patience will be key as he gradually builds up form, with Sunderland needing to carefully manage his return to peak condition.
