Wayne Rooney has emerged as a surprise contender for the Rangers managerial role as pressure mounts on Philippe Clement.

The former Derby County and Plymouth Argyle boss is currently without a job after being dismissed by the Pilgrims. He is listed among the bookmakersā€™ long-shot candidates to replace Clement if the Rangers hierarchy decides to part ways following their shocking 1-0 defeat to Queenā€™s Park.

Clement on the Brink of Rangers Exit

Clement’s future at Ibrox appears increasingly uncertain after the club’s humiliating Scottish Cup exit on Sunday, February 9. The loss marked the first time in the clubā€™s history that they had been eliminated at home by a lower-league side in the competition.

Speculation is rife that Clementā€™s departure is imminent, prompting discussions among supporters about potential successors. While Rooney would be an unconventional choice, the same was once said about Steven Gerrard, who went on to secure the clubā€™s 55th league title in 2021.

Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson, speaking to Ibrox News, believes Rooneyā€™s name is worth considering.

ā€œI like that Rooney has put himself out there for managerial roles, even though things havenā€™t gone his way,ā€ Ferguson said. ā€œImagine a scenario where Gerrard returns as manager and Rooney joins him as his assistant. It sounds crazy, but in football, nothing surprises you.

ā€œGerrard and Rooney are football men, and the respect they command from players is instant. Guys like that, who have been at the highest level, will always be listened to. Who knows? It would be surreal, but I quite like the idea.ā€

Possible Replacements for Clement

Rooney, who won multiple Premier League titles with Manchester United, has had mixed success as a manager. He showed promise at Derby County and D.C. United but struggled at Birmingham City and Plymouth. Despite this, Ferguson believes his presence would immediately command respect in the Rangers dressing room.

Aside from Rooney, Gerrard is considered the early frontrunner to take over if Clement is dismissed. Other names being linked to the role include Russell Martin, Gary Oā€™Neil, and Sean Dyche, each with their own set of supporters and skeptics.

For many Rangers fans, however, the priority remains clear: Clementā€™s departure and a swift appointment of a new manager.
