“If she makes it to a game, she’ll have to do a lap of honour!” – Smith

Consider it an unexpected perk of being a Hibs player—a family bonus, if you will—something previously enjoyed by parents of those fortunate enough to become Easter Road favourites.

Jordan Smith’s mother, Carol, is embracing her interactions with Hibs supporters on social media, frequently engaging with fans and expressing gratitude when they commend her son for his contributions to the team’s defensive stability. While Jordan finds this newfound attention surprising, he’s absolutely thrilled by it.

Asked whether his mother had always been the proud supporter cheering him on from the sidelines, Smith chuckled and admitted:

“Oh, absolutely. She’s always been a very proud mum. I remember getting injured when I was playing under-11s, and I think she got to me before the physio did!

“It can be a bit embarrassing at times, but now that I’m a parent myself with two kids I’m incredibly proud of, I completely get it. You just want the best for them in whatever they do. Fortunately, things are going well for me right now, so we’re all really happy.

“No, she hasn’t been to a game yet—she keeps pushing for it, though! I’ll have to make sure she gets up here. It’s a bit tricky logistically, but we’ll sort it out. At this point, I don’t think the fans would let me off the hook if she didn’t get a lap of honour when she finally does!”*

A Thank You to the Fans

Smith also took a moment to acknowledge the Hibs supporters for the warm welcome they’ve given him and his family:

*”I speak about family with nothing but pride, and my mum is a huge part of that. I told her to tone it down a few times, and I think that only encouraged her to do more! Instead of replying to just a few messages, I think she tries to respond to every single one.

“But it’s great. Right now, everything is going well, and it’s lovely to see the way Hibs fans have embraced not just me, but my family too.

“Moving up here was a bit of a gamble, but knowing my mum feels so involved despite the distance is really special.

“And I won’t be asking her to stop anymore—I think if she suddenly disappeared from social media, there’d probably be an uproar!”*

Until Carol makes her grand visit from Mansfield, Hibs fans will happily settle for Jordan. Since stepping in for the out-of-form Josef Bursik, the experienced back-up goalkeeper has been a steady presence between the posts.

Smith, who greatly admires Hearts rival Craig Gordon’s longevity at 42, feels rejuvenated in his own career—suggesting there’s still plenty left in the tank.
