Ian Harte Names £6m Leeds United Legend Among the Best He’s Played With

Former Leeds United defender Ian Harte has singled out a fellow club legend, signed for just £6 million, as one of the greatest players he has ever shared the pitch with.

Harte enjoyed a remarkable career spanning over two decades, facing some of the sport’s most iconic figures. The Irishman joined Leeds United at just 16 years old and became a key player as the club reached the Champions League semi-finals.

Beyond his time at Elland Road, Harte also had a stint in Spain with Levante, where he competed against legends like Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane. However, despite these experiences, his former Leeds teammate Mark Viduka still earns special recognition alongside those footballing greats.

Ian Harte Praises Leeds Icon Mark Viduka

Speaking to OnlyLeedsBros, Harte was asked about his favorite Leeds player. While he acknowledged playing against world-class talents, he highlighted Viduka and fellow Australian Harry Kewell as standout teammates.

“I’ve been fortunate to play against some unbelievable players,” Harte said. “Zidane or the original Ronaldo were incredible opponents. Facing Real Madrid with Leeds and later in Spain with Levante was special.

“But in terms of teammates, it’s tough to pick just one. Roy Keane was outstanding, even though I know Leeds fans might not like me mentioning a Manchester United player.

“Mark Viduka and Harry Kewell were phenomenal on their day. One game that stands out was against Liverpool when Viduka scored four goals in our 4-3 win. That was a truly special match.”

Leeds signed Viduka from Celtic in 2000 for around £6 million, and the Australian striker went on to net 72 goals in 166 appearances for the club.

Ian Harte’s Leeds United Title Prediction

Leeds are currently leading the Championship and pushing for a return to the Premier League under Daniel Farke. Harte believes the squad is stronger than last season and has a real shot at the title.

“If I’m honest, I think this year’s team is better than last year’s,” he said. “Last season had great individual talents like [Georginio] Rutter, Archie [Gray], and [Crysencio] Summerville, but Daniel has them playing fantastic football as a unit. Hopefully, they’ll go on to win the league.”

With Leeds set for a huge clash against Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United on Monday, their promotion push remains in full swing.
