New York Jets Eye High-Risk, High-Reward Prospect Shemar Stewart in NFL Draft

The New York Jets are poised to make one of the boldest moves of the offseason. ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid projects the team will select Texas A&M pass rusher Shemar Stewart with the No. 7 overall pick in his latest mock draft.

Stewart is considered a “potential over production” prospect, having recorded just 4.5 sacks in three college seasons. However, his ability to generate quick pressure (2.43 seconds to first pressure, the fastest in FBS) suggests untapped potential. A scout at the NFL Combine compared his physical traits and versatility to Jadeveon Clowney.

Lance Zierlein, another NFL draft analyst, described Stewart as “carved from granite,” measuring 6-foot-5 and 267 pounds at the Combine. His rare combination of size, length, and explosiveness ranked him among the top edge rushers in several key drills, including a 4.59-second 40-yard dash and a 40-inch vertical jump.

While Stewart’s college production raises concerns, analysts argue his impact extends beyond sack numbers. NFL draft expert Dane Brugler noted that Stewart led Texas A&M with 39 pressures last season, proving his disruptive presence.

Jets Double Down on Defense

In the second round, Reid predicts the Jets will draft Notre Dame cornerback Benjamin Morrison at No. 42 overall. With multiple secondary players set to hit free agency, including D.J. Reed, Morrison could be a key addition.

As the Jets prepare for a major defensive overhaul, Stewart and Morrison could be pivotal pieces in maintaining an elite unit. While Stewart’s selection carries risk, the Jets may be betting on his immense upside to deliver big rewards.
