The agent of a key Rangers player has now stated that his client is set to play in one of Europe’s top five leagues next season, a development that is likely to unsettle the club’s supporters.
Ferguson Hails Rangers Players After Fenerbahçe Victory
In what has been a challenging season at Ibrox, Rangers secured arguably their most impressive result of the campaign on Thursday, defeating José Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe 3-1 in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie.
Vaclav Cerny, currently on loan from Wolfsburg, netted twice, while Cyriel Dessers added the third for Barry Ferguson’s side. Dessers also saw two goals ruled out for offside in a dramatic night for the Scottish club in Istanbul, giving them a crucial advantage ahead of the second leg.
Speaking post-match, Ferguson—who took over as interim manager following Philippe Clement’s departure last month—praised his squad’s unity.
“I thought every single player, even those who came off the bench, deserves credit,” he said. “Even the substitutes were fully supportive. That kind of togetherness is crucial, and the players certainly showed it on the pitch tonight.”
Cerny echoed Ferguson’s sentiments, expressing his delight at the performance. “It was a huge win, but we know we’re only halfway there. It was the perfect way to start the tie, and I believe we deserved the victory. Now, we want to finish the job next week.”
Cerny Set to Return to Germany at Season’s End
Unfortunately for Rangers fans, Cerny’s time at Ibrox may be coming to an end. The 27-year-old, who has netted 17 goals across all competitions this season, appears likely to return to Wolfsburg once his loan spell concludes.
Speaking to the Czech media, as reported by The Daily Record, Cerny’s agent, David Nehoda, suggested that a long-term stay at Rangers is unlikely.
“I can’t say for certain what will happen, but I don’t think it’s very realistic for him to remain at Rangers,” Nehoda said. “His contract with Wolfsburg runs until the summer of 2027, so they may want him back, or there could be interest from clubs looking to buy him.”
Nehoda also revealed that there is already interest from clubs in France and Italy, both of which align with the winger’s ambitions. “I know Vaclav’s goal is to return to one of Europe’s top five leagues,” he added.
