Sunderland-born Jill Scott recently took a lighthearted dig at Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon during a national TV appearance.

Gordon, an England international, featured on A League of Their Own last month, going up against Wearsider Scott, who won the Euros with the Lionesses before retiring. Scott, who previously played for Sunderland, Manchester City, Everton, and Aston Villa, didn’t hold back when the show’s host, Romesh Ranganathan, brought up their footballing rivalry.

When asked how she felt about sharing the stage with a Newcastle player, Scott quickly fired back:

“Well, he’s on the losing team, so…”

Scott also teased Gordon by comparing his appearance to fellow guest Masie Adam, sparking laughter among the panel.

Gordon’s Costly Red Card

Just weeks after the show aired, Gordon suffered a major setback, picking up a red card during Newcastle United’s FA Cup clash against Brighton & Hove Albion.

With the game level at 1-1 and extra time approaching, Gordon continued chasing a through ball despite the offside flag being raised. In a moment of frustration, he pushed Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke in the back of the head, prompting referee Anthony Taylor to show him a straight red card for violent conduct.

The decision left Newcastle down to ten men and meant Gordon would serve a three-match ban, ruling him out of the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.

Following the incident, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe admitted losing Gordon was a blow but urged his squad to step up in his absence:

“Of course, it would be a big blow to us. But when someone suffers misfortune, it’s an opportunity for someone else. That’s what we have a squad for, and I’m sure Anthony would want us to carry on and be really strong.”
