Norwich City Dealt Injury Blow as Gunn and Nunez Ruled Out of Sheffield Wednesday Clash

Norwich City manager Johannes Hoff Thorup has confirmed that Angus Gunn and Marcelino Nunez will not be available for their upcoming fixture against Sheffield Wednesday.

Canaries Struggle for Form Amid Injury Concerns

A run of three draws in four matches has seen Norwich slip to 10th place in the Championship, now six points adrift of the play-off spots. As they prepare to face Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night, Thorup is eager to reintegrate some of his sidelined players.

Despite Josh Sargent scoring early, Norwich had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Oxford United on Friday. That match also saw the first-team debut of young goalkeeper Vicente Reyes, who stepped in for the injured Gunn. Meanwhile, backup goalkeeper George Long was also absent due to a concussion suffered in training.

Adding to Norwich’s woes, Marcelino Nunez suffered his third hamstring injury of the season, delaying his return to action.

Thorup Provides Injury Update

Speaking to club media, Thorup provided an update on Gunn and Nunez:

“Neither Angus nor Marcelino will be in the squad tomorrow. With Angus, we are aiming for the game after the international break. Marcelino is just a day short, but we’re hopeful he’ll be available for Friday.”

Another absentee, Amankwah Forson, has been sidelined since suffering a knee injury in the FA Cup against Brighton. Thorup confirmed the young Ghanaian will be in the squad against Sheffield Wednesday, but he is unlikely to play a significant role:

“Forson will be with us, but only if absolutely necessary. He’ll be part of the squad, but we need to carefully manage his fitness and build him back up.”

Injury Curse Strikes Again

Earlier this season, Thorup hinted that Norwich’s persistent injury troubles made the squad feel “cursed”. The absence of Gunn and Long forced the club to hand Reyes his debut, highlighting their bad luck.

Norwich have been plagued by long-term injuries, with Ben Chrisene and Liam Gibbs also among those sidelined. Nunez’s situation epitomizes the club’s struggles—after recovering from a hamstring injury, he returned only to suffer an ankle injury in a 30-minute cameo against Preston, extending his time out.

Who Starts in Goal?

With Gunn ruled out, Thorup faces a decision in goal. If Long is still unavailable, Reyes is likely to retain his spot between the posts.

Reyes conceded just one of two shots on target in the draw against Oxford, but Thorup may be hoping for Long’s return to provide experience. However, if Long isn’t fit, Reyes will have another chance to prove himself at senior level.
