Ponga’s Red-Hot Form Puts Pressure on Walsh for Maroons No.1 Jersey

Billy Slater has favored Reece Walsh over Kalyn Ponga for the past two State of Origin series, but Ponga is making a strong case for a recall with his blistering start to the 2025 NRL season.

Determined to reclaim his Queensland jersey, the Newcastle fullback has been in electrifying form, playing a key role in the Knights’ back-to-back victories. Ponga delivered another masterclass in Newcastle’s 26-12 win over the Dolphins, earning man-of-the-match honors for the second consecutive week. His standout performance included three try assists, five tackle breaks, and 202 running metres from 22 carries—numbers that had the rugby league world buzzing.

Respected commentator Andrew Voss hailed Ponga as “perhaps the best player in the competition” after his dominant display. His early-season excellence has also been reflected in Dally M voting, where he secured maximum points in both rounds so far. With Ponga in top form and injury-free, Newcastle’s finals hopes look promising, and Queensland selectors will have a major dilemma when choosing between him and Walsh for the No.1 jersey.

Ponga lost his Origin spot to Walsh in 2023 after a series of concussions and the Broncos fullback’s breakout performances. Walsh then cemented his place in Queensland’s lineup, leading the Maroons to victory in 2023 and holding onto the role in 2024 despite a quieter series as the Blues reclaimed the Shield. Ponga, who won the 2023 Dally M Medal as the league’s best player, admitted he was devastated to be overlooked last year.

Maroons Selection Battle Heats Up

Many believe Walsh, while electric, can be more erratic than Ponga and prone to errors. League legend Greg Alexander reinforced this sentiment, calling Ponga’s recent performances “supreme” and highlighting his unmatched influence on games.

“He was phenomenal every time he had the ball,” Alexander said on SEN radio. “His running, passing, and playmaking ability make him the complete package. He’s averaging more touches per game than any fullback did last season. If Newcastle continues to maximize his involvement, they’ll win more games than they lose—and that means making the finals.”

Walsh also had a strong start to the season, playing a key role in Brisbane’s dominant win over the Roosters. However, if Ponga maintains his current form, Slater may be forced to reconsider his fullback selection for Queensland. The Maroons coach could face a tough decision: stick with Walsh, who has served the team well, or find a way to fit both superstars into the lineup.
