The 27-year-old is currently under investigation by police following an incident in the closing moments of Sunday’s derby victory at Parkhead.
Vaclav Cerny has spoken out about the controversy surrounding his water-squirting celebration during the Old Firm clash, dismissing the uproar as “absurd.”
The Rangers winger is being investigated by Police Scotland after he sprayed water toward a section of Celtic fans behind the away dugout while celebrating Hamza Igamane’s late winner at Parkhead. Authorities have confirmed they received a report regarding the incident and that an investigation is ongoing.
Celtic also issued a statement, expressing their concerns about members of the visiting team interacting with home supporters and confirming they had raised the issue with the relevant authorities.
Cerny, currently on loan at Rangers from Wolfsburg, is away on international duty with the Czech Republic for their World Cup 2026 qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Gibraltar.
Speaking to Prague-based outlet iSport Blesk ahead of the qualifiers, Cerny suggested the incident was unintentional, attributing it to a mix of excitement and the close proximity of fans.
When asked about the matter, he responded cautiously, saying: “I don’t want to say too much, I can’t. I find it a bit absurd. The stands are so close, there was open water… I didn’t even realize what was happening in the moment. I just ran. It’s a derby.”
Under SFA regulations, Cerny could still face disciplinary action for engaging with fans, with potential sanctions ranging from a two to eight-game suspension.
Hampden officials are under pressure from police to ensure players avoid interactions with supporters in the highly charged atmosphere of the Old Firm rivalry.
Cerny is expected to feature for the Czech Republic against the Faroes on Saturday before traveling to Gibraltar on Tuesday for their second qualifier. He will then return to Rangers ahead of their matches against Dundee and Hibernian, followed by their Europa League quarter-final first leg against Athletic Bilbao on April 10.
