Norwich City Faces Key Decision on Angus Gunn’s Future as Contract Nears Expiry

Angus Gunn’s future is set to be a major talking point for Norwich City in the coming months, as the goalkeeper’s contract at Carrow Road is set to expire this summer.

The former Manchester City shot-stopper recently revealed that he has had no discussions with the club regarding a new deal, casting uncertainty over his long-term prospects with the Norfolk side.

Gunn has been the first-choice goalkeeper for most of the season, but a hamstring injury has sidelined him in recent weeks, with George Long and Vicente Reyes stepping in during his absence. As Norwich weigh their options between the posts, Football League World sought insight from resident Canaries supporter Zeke Downes on how the club should approach this crucial decision.

Norwich Urged to Make a Firm Decision on Gunn’s Future

With no contract talks currently underway, Gunn’s four-year tenure with Norwich may well come to an end this summer.

Since joining permanently from Southampton in June 2021—after a prior loan spell in the 2017/18 season—the 29-year-old has made over 100 appearances for the club. Following in the footsteps of his father, former Norwich goalkeeper Bryan Gunn, he has been a key figure at Carrow Road. However, recent performances have raised concerns, with Downes suggesting that it may be time for both parties to move on.

Discussing the situation, Downes stated:

“It’s a tough one because Gunn is a Norwich boy, and his dad is a club legend. We loved him during his loan spell, and he had a great season last year, but his performances have declined significantly. Statistically, he’s the worst goalkeeper in the league for preventing goals, which is a major issue.”

Gunn’s Stats Raise Concerns Over His Norwich Future

Gunn’s underlying numbers this season paint a concerning picture. Among Championship goalkeepers who have played at least 20 games, he has the lowest save expectancy, conceding nearly six more goals than expected, according to FBRef.

His save percentage of 66% means one in three shots on target ends up in the net, while only Plymouth Argyle’s Conor Hazard and Daniel Grimshaw have a lower clean sheet percentage than Gunn’s 13.8%.

Given that neither Long nor Reyes have particularly impressed in Gunn’s absence, Downes believes Norwich must prioritize strengthening the goalkeeping position in the transfer window.

“If Gunn continues performing like this, we’re going to concede too many goals. I’d move on and bring in fresh competition. Ideally, we need two new goalkeepers, but I think the club will likely sign just one. We need someone who can actually make big saves and provide that extra layer of security at the back.”

With Norwich aiming for a promotion push next season, the decision on Gunn’s future could be pivotal. Whether the club chooses to extend his stay or look for a new number one, it’s clear that goalkeeping stability will be crucial to their ambitions.
