Birmingham City are on track for an immediate return to the Championship from League One.

Currently sitting 12 points clear at the top of the League One table ahead of Wycombe Wanderers and Wrexham, the Blues are in a strong position to secure promotion.

Following their relegation last season, Birmingham appointed Chris Davies as their manager. The former assistant coach at Celtic, Leicester City, and Tottenham Hotspur has impressed in his first season in charge. With the transfer window approaching, he will have the opportunity to strengthen his squad further.

Birmingham City’s Predicted Goalkeeper and Defence

We asked Grok to predict five potential signings for Birmingham later this year and to incorporate them into their strongest starting XI.

AI suggests that Birmingham could sign goalkeeper Angus Gunn when his contract expires at Norwich City. AI stated: “The Scotland international, who played at Euro 2024, has extensive Championship experience and is set to become a free agent in the summer of 2025. If he doesn’t extend his deal, Birmingham could see him as a valuable addition.”

At right-back, Nathaniel Clyne has been tipped to join after his contract at Crystal Palace runs out. AI commented: “With his deal expiring in June 2025, Clyne could be a cost-effective, short-term solution at right-back, offering experience and reliability, particularly if Ethan Laird departs or faces competition.”

In central defence, Christoph Klarer and Ben Davies have formed a solid partnership and are expected to retain their places in the Championship. Meanwhile, Alex Cochrane, who arrived from Hearts last year, has settled well in English football.

Birmingham City’s Predicted Midfield and Attack

In midfield, Tomoki Iwata and Paik Seung-ho are key players, with Marc Leonard providing additional depth.

Birmingham are backed to re-sign academy graduate Nathan Redmond from Burnley. AI noted: “A Birmingham native, Redmond has Premier League and Championship experience with Norwich City and Southampton. Despite injury struggles at Burnley, his creativity and top-flight experience—over 300 appearances—make him a smart potential signing.”

John Swift has also been suggested as a target due to uncertainty surrounding his future at West Brom. AI remarked: “Swift boasts an impressive Championship record, having contributed 31 goals and 33 assists in over 200 appearances for Reading. Since joining West Brom in 2022, he has continued to be a creative force.”

On the left wing, Tom Lawrence has been linked with a move from Rangers. AI explained: “His ability to play across multiple attacking roles, combined with his technical skill and goal-scoring threat, aligns well with Chris Davies’ possession-based approach. Although injuries have affected his time at Rangers, a fresh start at Birmingham could benefit both parties.”
