Rangers Backed for Sensational Souness Return – With Mourinho in the Mix

Rangers legend Graeme Souness has been tipped for a dramatic return to Ibrox, potentially alongside a renowned manager with extensive Premier League experience.

The former player-manager remains closely connected to the club and was recently seen at Ibrox for Barry Ferguson’s first home match as interim boss – a defeat to Motherwell. However, Rangers have since bounced back impressively, eliminating Fenerbahce from the Europa League and securing a crucial Old Firm victory over Celtic.

With long-term uncertainty surrounding the club due to a pending San Francisco 49ers-backed takeover and the absence of a permanent manager, Derek Ferguson – brother of interim boss Barry – believes Souness would be an invaluable addition to the setup.

Following the recent returns of ex-players such as Ferguson, Billy Dodds, Neil McCann, and Allan McGregor, he argues that Souness’ winning mentality is exactly what Rangers need. Souness was previously involved in the process that led to Philippe Clement’s appointment in 2023.

Why Bringing Back Souness Makes Sense

Speaking to Ibrox News, Ferguson said:

> “Souness brings an aura and a wealth of experience—exactly the calibre of person we need at the club. He may have misjudged Rangers initially, but he adapted quickly. He knows the club inside out and has immense passion.

“This is why many fans are excited to see Barry, [Billy] Dodds, [Neil] McCann, and [Allan] McGregor involved. Rangers have been crying out for this kind of leadership for years. Whether Barry remains in charge or not next season, he should stay involved.

“I’ve been saying for years that Souness should take on a role behind the scenes. Clement may have felt threatened by his presence, but I see it differently. Someone with his experience and knowledge should be part of the club’s future.”

Mourinho to Ibrox?

Why settle for one fiery personality when you could have two?

Fenerbahce boss José Mourinho, ahead of the Europa League clash against Rangers, hinted at his openness to managing either side of the Old Firm one day. Ferguson believes there’s no harm in considering the legendary Portuguese coach for a role at Ibrox.

He told Ibrox News:

> “Why not? I was watching that interview with my son, and as soon as Mourinho hinted at interest, we both looked at each other. Honestly, I can see a scenario where he’s appointed. With the takeover and all that comes with it, that would be an incredible move.

“At the same time, I don’t know if he’s playing mind games. He spoke about loving everything about the Celtic-Rangers game he watched recently—he was clearly excited. And I’d be excited too.

“With Rangers competing in Europe every season, that’s bound to attract top managers. So why not someone of Mourinho’s calibre to help Rangers close the gap on Celtic?”
