David Edgar has weighed in on the possibility of Rangers signing Greek midfielder Konstantinos Karetsas this summer.

The 17-year-old shone for Greece in their 3-0 Nations League win over Scotland at Hampden Park on Sunday, 23 March, even getting on the scoresheet.

Given his standout performance, many Rangers fans were quick to suggest that the Ibrox club should target the Racing Genk midfielder. However, Edgar, host of the Heart and Hand podcast, believes such a move is unlikely for several reasons.

He highlighted that Karetsas is unlikely to be available for £7 million, despite what commentators claimed. Edgar also pointed out that European heavyweights like Inter Milan, Liverpool, and Atletico Madrid are all reportedly interested in securing the youngster’s signature.

Writing on X, he said: “I don’t think we’d be getting near Karetsas. Despite what the commentator said, he’s not leaving Belgium for £7m. Clubs like Inter, Liverpool, and Atletico Madrid all said to be interested.”

Rangers should focus on uncovering hidden talents

Karetsas would undoubtedly be an excellent addition to the Gers squad, offering versatility, tenacity, and technical ability that align well with the demands of Scottish football. His ability to dictate the tempo, bolster the midfield, and contribute offensively would excite the Ibrox faithful while strengthening Rangers’ domestic and European ambitions.

However, Karetsas’ rapid rise suggests he is destined for a move to an elite Champions League club, with potential suitors such as Bayern Munich and PSG likely to price him out of Rangers’ reach.

Rather than chasing a talent whose transfer fee and wages would stretch their budget, Rangers would be better served by utilizing their scouting network to identify hidden gems. Focusing on unearthing prospects from regions like Scandinavia or Eastern Europe for around £5 million could provide better long-term value and sustainability.

With the impending takeover set to clarify the club’s decision-makers, it’s crucial that Rangers begin planning meticulously for the upcoming transfer window. They cannot afford to let Celtic widen the gap any further in the battle for domestic supremacy.
