3-4-2-1 Specialist in Prime Position for Rangers Job, Says Former Ibrox Star

A coach who utilizes a 3-4-2-1 system is in a strong position to become the next permanent Rangers manager, according to a former club favorite.

Rangers Manager Speculation as Ferguson Shines in Interim Role

Since Philippe Clement’s departure, Rangers have experienced a resurgence under interim boss Barry Ferguson. The club’s fortunes have improved significantly, with Ferguson guiding them to a Europa League last-16 triumph over Fenerbahce and Jose Mourinho, followed by a thrilling 3-2 victory over Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic at Parkhead.

With 49ers Enterprises securing an agreement in principle to take over at Ibrox, the focus will soon turn to their choice for the club’s next permanent manager.

Several high-profile names have been linked with the vacancy, including Rafael Benitez, who is reportedly open to a return to management in Glasgow. Meanwhile, former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has also been mentioned as a potential candidate following his exit from Al Ettifaq earlier this year.

However, Ferguson—who, according to Transfermarkt, employs a 3-4-2-1 setup—has emerged as a serious contender for the role. His brother, former footballer and pundit Derek Ferguson, recently shared his thoughts on the situation:

“This is a whole different challenge. I took him to Rangers when he was just a boy. The club is in his blood. There’s only one conclusion: He wants the job, but he knows he has to keep winning games.”

Ferguson has now received a strong endorsement from his former teammate Lee McCulloch. Speaking at a recent charity event, as reported by Rangers News, McCulloch highlighted why Ferguson is a leading candidate for the full-time role.

“He’s restored belief, reconnected the team with the fans, and brought fight back into the squad. The results in Europe and the recent Old Firm win speak for themselves.”

“He has put himself in a fantastic position for whatever comes next season. It wouldn’t surprise me if he landed the job permanently. He looks the part, sounds the part, and, most importantly, he’s getting results.”

With Ferguson impressing in his interim spell and speculation continuing to swirl, all eyes will be on Ibrox as the club prepares for a crucial decision regarding its managerial future.
