Former Leeds United prospect Morten Spencer has been forced to retire from football at just 21 years old.

The central midfielder began his development in Sunderland’s youth academy before moving to Leeds in 2020. Although he was a regular at youth level for the Whites, he never made a senior breakthrough and joined Derby County’s under-21 squad last summer.

Spencer’s last appearance came in Premier League 2 in October, and he has now officially announced his retirement.

Sharing the news on Instagram, he wrote: “Heartbroken to be saying this. I will be retiring from professional football due to a cardiac problem I can’t carry on with. All I’ve ever known is to kick a ball, and I have learnt everything from the game. I’m thankful and proud of what I’ve achieved. I will never forget the memories I have and have created along an amazing journey. Football is in my DNA, and I will continue to support everyone who helped me along the way.”

Spencer, who represented both England and Norway at youth level, also had exposure to senior football in the Papa John’s Trophy while at Leeds.

Following his announcement, several former teammates have expressed their support on social media, including ex-Leeds prospect Max Dean.
