Newcastle Knights rising star Fletcher Sharpe is confident he can thrive alongside high-profile signing Dylan Brown when the $13 million playmaker arrives in 2026.

Sharpe has had an electric start to the season, putting forward a strong case to be the club’s long-term five-eighth even with Brown’s impending arrival.

The 20-year-old recently inked a new three-year contract and is expected to form a lasting halves partnership with the Kiwi international.

While Brown has mainly played as a five-eighth throughout his career, he is tipped to take on the halfback role at the Knights, allowing Sharpe to retain the No.6 jersey. Sharpe revealed there were no internal discussions about shifting his position when the club made the move for Brown.

“There weren’t really any talks within the club,” he told Wide World of Sports. “He’s an unbelievable and exciting talent, and I think we’ll be able to complement each other well.

“As a team, we haven’t focused too much on it — right now, we’re all focused on this season.”

Speaking on Freddy and The Eighth, Sharpe did say he’d be willing to take on the halfback role if needed, although that appears unlikely for now.

Since making his NRL debut last year, Sharpe has been a versatile option for Newcastle, able to slot in across the backline — a trait that has proven valuable.

There was some pre-season speculation about his ideal position, but the Cessnock local has now clarified his preference.

“I’ve always been a half or five-eighth since I started playing footy, but when I was 17, I moved to fullback because of an injury in the team and never shifted back,” Sharpe explained.

“Fullback used to be my preferred position, but KP [Kalyn Ponga] has that spot secured, and I’m really enjoying forming a partnership with him.”

Sharpe played several different roles last year and believes that versatility has only strengthened his game.

“Playing in different positions helps you understand the demands of each role, both for yourself and your teammates,” he said.

Although his connection with Ponga is still developing, fans are already excited about their on-field chemistry. Sharpe praised the captain for his leadership and support since his debut.

“He’s been awesome,” Sharpe said. “Last year, when I played fullback, he guided me on what was needed and what the team expected from me.

“This year, building that combination with him has been really enjoyable. We’re working on a few things — and it’s exciting.”
