An fixation with England’s lower levels has been one of the recent complaints levelled at Rangers’ recruitment practices.
Things have changed since Nils Koppen became the recruitment director and Philippe Clement became manager of Ibrox. Now, different markets are being targeted for fresh talent.
Cross-border raids are still possible, though, as Rangers has been linked to a deal for Peterborough United’s Kwame Poku.
As Rangers circle, Kwame Poku is already the target of bids.
Even though League One isn’t the best football league, the Ghanaian international has shown promise with 10 goals and seven assists for the Posh.
Although Rangers have an advantage because they are outside of England, the compensation cost is significantly less than the millions that a Premier League or Championship team would have to pay. Wingers with these numbers are always in demand.
In January, the 23-year-old is also available to talk about the parameters of a pre-contract deal.
In terms of Peterborough players, it might be Poku’s fourth success after prior transfer attempts for Ivan Toney, Siriki Dembele, and Jonson Clarke-Harris.
The owner of Peterborough claims the Poku transfer bid.
Poku’s future has been no exception to Peterborough’s reputation for being outspoken about their transfer business, particularly when it comes to selling players.
The owner of the League One team, Darragh MacAnthony, disclosed on his Hard Truth Podcast:
Before Luton arrived, there had been four other clubs, and to be fair, Kwame was excellent and didn’t cause any problems at all.
We recently informed their CEO, Gary Sweet, that we would not be selling Kwame. Although Kwame is under 24, the bid was respectable—it was in the millions with add-ons and other expenses.
“We’ll receive the same bid they made at the tribunal the following year.”
That Poku doesn’t relocate to Scotland or overseas makes MacAnthony happy.
If losing a player hurts their prospects of getting promoted, Peterborough is more than willing to be patient and let them finish out their contract.
Poku ought to be a top priority for a team like Rangers that is on a tight budget. According to Fashion Sakala, these players may not eventually fetch £10 million or £20 million, but every £4 million and £5 million adds up, especially since the original sum was negligible.
