Ally McCoist: Greg Taylor Could Succeed at Rangers, But Isn’t a Priority Signing
Celtic left-back Greg Taylor, who is out of contract this summer, has been linked with a sensational move to Rangers – but Ibrox legend Ally McCoist believes there are more pressing areas for the club to strengthen.
While pundits like Kris Boyd and Michael Stewart have suggested the 27-year-old could make the shock switch across the Old Firm divide, McCoist says such a move wouldn’t be as controversial as it once might have been.
Speaking to Record Sport via talkSPORT BET, McCoist said: “He absolutely could get in the team and play, I don’t have any doubt about that. He’s a good player. It’s probably not as big a deal now as it was years ago. I definitely think he could do a job for Rangers.”
However, McCoist highlighted that with both Ridvan Yilmaz and Jefte already in the squad, left-back isn’t a top priority for the incoming manager this summer.
“I think Rangers have got far bigger priorities in terms of positions that need addressed. If you’re asking whether Taylor is good enough? Absolutely. But he’s not essential right now,” he added.
Asked whether Taylor would be willing to risk his reputation at Celtic by joining their biggest rivals, McCoist said: “I don’t see why not. I remember when Mo Johnston made the move – after that, anything’s possible. It wouldn’t cause the same stir as that did. You’ve had others like Kenny Miller, Alfie Conn, and Elvis [Steven Pressley], so it’s not the same taboo it once was.”
McCoist, who was on the coaching staff when Miller returned to Rangers after a spell at Celtic, also said he’d have no hesitation signing a player from Parkhead.
“Rangers need the best players they can get right now, regardless of where they come from – whether that’s Celtic, Hibs, Aberdeen, or FC Zurich,” he said. “If a player from Celtic can help improve Rangers, then you take that player. Simple as that.”
