Norwich City Receive MLS Offer for Veteran Defender Shane Duffy
Norwich City have reportedly received a transfer bid from Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls for experienced centre-back Shane Duffy, according to BBC Norfolk’s Chris Reeve.
The 33-year-old former Premier League defender has played a crucial role under head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup this season, starting 40 of the club’s 41 Championship matches. Duffy’s leadership and know-how have been pivotal in guiding an otherwise youthful backline, helping Norwich keep seven clean sheets during his appearances.
Duffy, who joined the Canaries last summer, is under contract at Carrow Road until 2026. However, a potential move to the United States now appears to be on the cards, which would mark the Republic of Ireland international’s first venture outside the UK in his playing career.
New York Red Bulls Target Duffy
As reported by Reeve, the New York Red Bulls have formally submitted an offer for Duffy. With the MLS season still in its early stages and the American transfer window open until April 23, a deal could be completed before Norwich’s campaign concludes.
The Red Bulls are part of the wider Red Bull football group, which includes clubs like RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg. The brand also sponsors Norwich’s Championship rivals Leeds United, having signed a lucrative partnership deal with the club in May 2024.
The MLS has become a popular destination for veteran European stars in recent years, with legends such as Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, and Frank Lampard making the switch in the twilight of their careers. Today, Inter Miami — owned by David Beckham — boasts former Barcelona greats Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Luis Suárez, and Jordi Alba. For Duffy, the opportunity to play in the US and experience life in New York could prove to be an attractive option.
Norwich’s Defensive Reinforcements Needed
Regardless of whether Duffy accepts the offer and departs, Norwich boss Hoff Thorup will need to focus on adding experience to his defensive ranks this summer. Outside of Duffy and right-back Jack Stacey, all of Norwich’s natural defenders are aged 23 or younger.
This lack of veteran presence at the back has contributed to a leaky defence, with the Canaries conceding 56 goals so far this season — more than any other side in the Championship’s top half.
To remain competitive and mount a serious promotion challenge, Norwich must look to bolster their backline with seasoned professionals who can handle the physical and mental demands of a Championship campaign, whether or not Duffy remains part of the squad.
