Leeds Rhinos Eye Jock Madden Transfer – But Quota Rules Pose Major Hurdle
Leeds Rhinos are reportedly keen on signing Brisbane Broncos playmaker Jock Madden, though Super League’s overseas quota regulations appear to have put a potential deal in jeopardy.
According to Code Sports in Australia, Leeds head coach Brad Arthur had identified Madden as a target to strengthen his options in the halves. Despite being contracted with Brisbane until the end of next season, the 25-year-old has frequently been made available to other clubs and was once again touted as a possible transfer during the off-season.
However, Madden has slipped down the Broncos’ depth chart following the arrival of veteran half Ben Hunt, prompting the player to seek more consistent playing time elsewhere.
A move to Super League now seems unlikely due to Madden’s failure to meet the competition’s eligibility criteria. Super League rules require incoming NRL players to have played at least half of their team’s games in the previous season. While recent rule changes have opened a pathway for younger players from NSW and Queensland Cup competitions, Madden, at 25, doesn’t qualify for the age exemption and played only 10 matches for the Broncos in 2023—falling short of the 50% threshold.
Without special dispensation, Leeds are unlikely to proceed with the signing.
Had the move gone through, Madden would have added depth to an already crowded half-back group at Headingley, with Brodie Croft, Matt Frawley, Jake Connor, and Jack Sinfield all capable of filling the role. Still, the long-term futures of Croft and Frawley remain unclear beyond this season, which may see Leeds revisit their recruitment strategy in the near future.
