Rangers winger Oscar Cortes still not near full fitness, says injury expert

Oscar Cortes is still some way off full fitness following his injury layoff, according to sports injury specialist Dr Rajpal Brar.

The Colombian winger, who hasn’t played since Rangers’ 3-1 win over St Johnstone on 12 January, recently spoke about missing several games and his ambitions to return to first-team action. However, Dr Brar believes his return must be managed with caution.

With the Premiership title race essentially over and European competition still in play, Barry Ferguson may consider rotating his squad against Aberdeen on 13 April—but Cortes is unlikely to be a starting option.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Dr Brar explained: ā€œHe’ll need minutes to work toward full fitness, so his desire to return to the squad makes sense. But for the manager, it’s about balancing trust in a player who’s barely featured due to multiple injuries. It’s doubtful he’ll start or play 90 minutes given he’s been out since January.ā€

Rangers must take cautious approach with Cortes

Given his persistent muscle issues and just three league starts this season, rushing the 22-year-old back into the starting lineup could be risky. Instead, easing him in with 20-30 minute substitute appearances would be the smart route.

This measured approach would help Cortes rebuild his match fitness gradually, reduce the risk of further setbacks, and allow him to return stronger next season. His pace and creativity remain valuable assets—but only if he can stay healthy.
