Marcelino Nunez’s recent absence from Norwich City’s starting lineup has raised eyebrows, especially considering his proven quality at Championship level.

Since arriving at Carrow Road in the summer of 2022, the 25-year-old Chilean midfielder has consistently impressed with his contributions at both ends of the pitch. Known for his technical ability and all-around midfield play, Nunez has largely been a regular starter during his time in Norfolk.

However, his omission from the XI in four of Norwich’s last eight Championship fixtures—including the 2-1 loss to Burnley on April 11—marks a surprising turn in form for the £15,000-a-week star (per Capology).

“He’s clearly a top talent” – Norwich fan shares views on Nunez’s campaign

Norwich City fan pundit Zeke Downes weighed in when asked if Nunez’s stop-start season had been disappointing:

“When he’s been fit and playing, he hasn’t let us down at all. His talent is obvious—he’s one of the best midfielders in the league.”

Downes cited injuries, including two or three setbacks for Nunez himself, as a major reason for the inconsistency. “He hasn’t had a consistent run of games, and our midfield has been rotating a lot—with players like McLean, Sorensen, Wright, Slimane, Marcondes, Schwartau, and Forson all being used.”

He added, “There’s been no settled trio in midfield, which has hurt our cohesion. Last season, when McLean, Nunez, and Sara played together regularly, the midfield really clicked.”

“Make him a key figure” – Calls grow for Nunez to be central to Norwich’s plans

With just one year left on his contract heading into the 2025/26 campaign, speculation is beginning to build over Nunez’s future at the club.

Given his reduced role in recent months, it’s fair to wonder whether he might consider moving on in search of more consistent minutes.

Downes concluded: “It would be a real shame to lose Nunez. I’d love to see us build the team around him. He’s still at a great age, incredibly talented, and I doubt we’d find anyone of his quality for the £3 million we paid.”
