Lee Hendrie believes Ruud van Nistelrooy deserves the opportunity to lead Leicester City into next season, despite the club’s current struggles and looming relegation to the Championship.

Van Nistelrooy, who took over in November, has faced a tough stint in charge, managing only three wins from 21 games. Leicester recently ended an eight-match goal drought in the league with a 2-2 draw against Brighton, but still sit 19th in the table—17 points from safety with just six games left.

Hendrie pointed out the challenges Van Nistelrooy has faced, arguing the squad was never strong enough to stay in the Premier League. He feels a major overhaul is required this summer and believes the 48-year-old deserves a shot at guiding the rebuild—if he’s willing to stay.

Speaking to Football League World, Hendrie said:

“This is one of those situations where the manager walked into an incredibly tough role. Expectations were high given what Van Nistelrooy showed during his time at Manchester United, and that likely influenced Leicester’s decision to bring him in.

Whether it was the right appointment is debatable right now—it hasn’t looked like a good fit. Still, there have been flashes of promise.”

He continued:

“The current squad clearly needs refreshing. I’d give Van Nistelrooy a chance. If he’s backed with funds and allowed to bring in his own players, I think we could see a very different Leicester side in the Championship.

I wouldn’t judge him too harshly based on this season—the team was never good enough to compete at this level. But he might have what it takes to take the club forward.”

Despite that, the situation remains uncertain. Van Nistelrooy has struggled to win over the fans, and with the club on the brink of relegation, a parting of ways could ultimately be best for all involved. The team’s poor form and performances have cast serious doubt over whether he is the right man to lead a revival.
