Rangers Interim Manager Barry Ferguson Still Hoping for Permanent Role Amid Takeover Talks
Barry Ferguson remains in contention to land the Rangers job on a full-time basis as the club prepares for a potential ownership change. The 47-year-old stepped into the role following the dismissal of Philippe Clement and has already endured a rollercoaster spell in the Ibrox dugout.
The highlight of Ferguson’s stint so far came on 16 March when he guided Rangers to a dramatic 3-2 victory over arch-rivals Celtic in Glasgow. However, his time in charge has also seen setbacks, including the club’s exit from the Europa League after a 2-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao on 17 April in the second leg of their quarter-final tie.
McCoist Doubts Ferguson’s Long-Term Prospects
Rangers’ European exit has seemingly damaged Ferguson’s chances of securing the role permanently. Club legend Ally McCoist voiced his doubts live on TNT Sports 2 following the loss in Spain, saying, “My guess would be they’ll look elsewhere.”
The ongoing speculation around the club’s future ownership adds another layer of uncertainty. With the 49ers Enterprises takeover appearing imminent, Rangers supporters are hopeful that a new era will bring long-term stability and success.
Pride on the Line as Season Nears Its End
With silverware now out of reach due to both their European elimination and an underwhelming domestic campaign—currently trailing Celtic by 15 points—Rangers’ focus shifts to finishing the season on a high note.
Their next major target is the final Old Firm Derby of the season on 4 May, where bragging rights and pride remain very much at stake. Before that, Ferguson will aim to get the team back on track with a solid performance away to St Mirren on 26 April.
The Gers will then wrap up the season with home matches against Aberdeen and Dundee United, followed by a trip to Easter Road to face an in-form Hibernian on 17 May.
Whether or not Ferguson remains at the helm long-term, he’ll be eager to sign off with a strong finish to what has been a challenging tenure in charge at Ibrox.
