Ivan Cleary has shared his thoughts on the recent contract saga surrounding Lachlan Galvin, offering insight based on his own son’s experience with high-stakes negotiations.
The Penrith Panthers coach spoke to the Sydney Morning Herald and used Nathan Cleary’s early career as a reference point, advising young players like Galvin to consider a more grounded approach to big-money offers.
“I’ve seen it too often,” Cleary said. “No matter your age or who you are, once there’s a hefty price tag involved, expectations shift—both inside and outside the club.”
Although he acknowledged that most player managers disregard his views on high-priced deals, Cleary believes inflated contracts place unfair pressure on young talent.
Reflecting on Nathan’s path, Cleary revealed the young star initially accepted below-market deals to avoid unnecessary media scrutiny and expectation. “Nathan is a good example. I think it helped him,” he said.
Addressing Galvin’s reported availability, Cleary cast doubt on Penrith’s pursuit of the 19-year-old, suggesting it’s unlikely he joins the club in 2027 unless the price is right. “I don’t think so—unless it’s a bargain,” he stated.
Galvin, a highly rated five-eighth, is expected to attract plenty of interest when he becomes eligible for negotiations on November 1, with the Parramatta Eels believed to be leading the race for his signature.
