Despite Borja Sainz’s explosive start to the 2024–25 season, Norwich City owner Mark Attanasio has stated that the team has no plans to trade him in January.
This season, the Spaniard from City has become one of the league’s top players. Since Josh Sargent isn’t available, the extra duty seems to have increased his goal-scoring potential even further.
Over the course of 15 games, Sainz has scored 11 goals, some of which, particularly against Middlesbrough, have been absolutely explosive.
Clubs from all around the world are already considering the 23-year-old as a potential transfer target due to the way he has started this new season. Sainz is reportedly being pursued by Athletic Bilbao, who play in his own country’s top level, and Galatasaray, a Turkish powerhouse.
They are working with the player in Norfolk to find him a new contract and keep him off of their growing list of injured players. Ben Knapper, Norwich’s sporting director, is trying to work out new terms for the winger, whose present deal expires in the summer of 2026, according to Norwich manager Johannes Hoff Thorup.
“If they do decide to sell him, getting him committed to a new contract will give them much more bargaining power, but that’s not something that they are considering right now,” the Canaries’ owner said.
Borja Sainz, January claim by Mark Attanasio
The club’s winter preparations for their star Spaniard were outlined by Attanasio, who also said that they are not in a haste to let go of Sainz.
The American entrepreneur hasn’t held his position for very long. In August, he reached an agreement with Delia Smith and Michael Wynn Jones that would become his Norfolk Holdings firm the Norwich’s largest stakeholder.
Regarding the Sainz, January predicament, he stated at City’s AGM on Wednesday night: “We don’t have to sell Borja (Sainz) in January because we can control what we can control.
At some point, if I understand the ecosystem, you’re getting paid a very full price—it doesn’t have to be an extreme price—and it’s something that someone wants to do. In other words, we don’t need to sell him at all.
For us, Borja has been excellent. He runs for ninety minutes and does everything for us. I went in today and saw all of the executives, including the assistants. There is a chart showing all of the players and the number of appearances they have made, and Borja Sainz is the player who has made the most appearances for the club.
‘Well, gosh, that’s amazing,’ I said. He is currently quite popular and works very hard. ‘Well, does he ever say no?’ I said. “No, he always goes,” they responded.
“He has excellent character, therefore you should respect his wishes to move on if they arise. However, I believe that January would be a bit too early for us.
Norwich must wait for Borja Sainz’s absurd January offer.
Right now, the Canaries’ greatest chance of qualifying for the playoffs is to surf the wave that the 23-year-old has created. The only person who can pull this club out of the injury-plagued muck they’re in right now is him.
With Jonathan Rowe and Gabriel Sara departing the team, Hoff Thorup wasn’t exactly in a position to flourish in the summer. Sainz now appears to be their only realistic attacking chance as Sargent is sidelined for some time.
As a result, they ought to reject any offer that doesn’t seem absurdly attractive.
