Glasgow Rangers appear to be on the verge of a significant transformation, with the takeover by 49ers Enterprises nearing completion. Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers are said to have sealed a deal that will see them acquire a 51% controlling stake in the Ibrox club—a promising development ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Although Rangers may not have a massive budget when the summer transfer window opens, the new ownership could still provide a timely boost as the team looks to rebuild after a trophyless campaign.

The first major call will be selecting a new manager. According to TEAMtalk, Steven Gerrard is open to a return to Ibrox, having previously managed the club from 2018 to 2021 before his underwhelming stint at Al-Ettifaq. Currently a free agent, the former Liverpool captain could be tempted back to familiar territory.

Another high-profile name in the frame is José Mourinho. Despite being contracted to Fenerbahçe until 2026, Mourinho reportedly showed interest in a potential move to Scotland. He impressed many with his sportsmanship after Fenerbahçe’s recent Europa League loss to Rangers, entering their dressing room to offer his congratulations. A move to Ibrox would require compensation, but TEAMtalk suggests he would be open to the challenge.

Should Mourinho land the job, his arrival could have a substantial impact—particularly in attracting top-tier talent. Here’s a look at a potential dream XI that Mourinho might assemble if he takes over:

Goalkeeper – Liam Kelly

With Jack Butland’s inconsistency this season, Kelly could step in as a reliable option. He’s kept four clean sheets in ten games, including a standout performance in a 3-0 victory over Celtic.

Right Back – Nathan Patterson

Although a January return from Everton didn’t materialize, Patterson would be a natural successor to James Tavernier, whose time at the club may be drawing to a close.

Centre Back – Bamo Meite

Linked to Rangers in January, Meite ended up on loan at Montpellier but could be available this summer. At 23, he has significant upside and might be open to a switch from Marseille.

Centre Back – John Souttar

When fit, Souttar is arguably Rangers’ top central defender. After an injury-plagued season, a solid pre-season could see him return to form.

Left Back – Ridvan Yilmaz

Yilmaz has shown flashes of quality when confident. With 29 appearances this term, he remains a competitive option at left-back alongside Jefte.

Central Midfield – Nico Raskin

Raskin has had a standout campaign and may emerge as a leader following Tavernier’s departure. His display against Celtic and recent Belgium cap highlight his rising profile.

Central Midfield – Mohamed Diomande

Diomande has been a revelation in midfield, excelling both in deeper roles and as an advanced playmaker.

Right Wing – Vaclav Cerny

If funds permit, securing Cerny permanently should be a top priority. He’s delivered 17 goals and seven assists in 47 appearances.

Attacking Midfield – Gio Reyna

Linked with a move to Rangers, Reyna could be a marquee signing. Valued at £8.5 million, Mourinho’s presence could be key in making the deal happen.

Left Wing – Ianis Hagi

Though more natural centrally, Hagi has been effective on the wing, with three goals and four assists this season.

Striker – Hamza Igamane

After an impressive debut season with 15 goals and three assists, Igamane has drawn Premier League interest. Mourinho could play a pivotal role in convincing him to stay put for another year.
