A new update from Derek Ferguson suggests that his brother, Barry Ferguson, has a “50-50” shot at becoming Rangers’ next permanent manager this summer.

Rangers’ Managerial Situation

The search for a new manager is ongoing at Ibrox, with Barry Ferguson currently serving as interim boss until the end of the season. The former captain has impressed in patches, but with Rangers now out of the Europa League and little left to fight for, questions remain over whether he has the experience needed at the top level.

There has been speculation that iconic manager Jose Mourinho is open to the Rangers job—provided he receives financial backing from 49ers Enterprises—but no formal contact has been made.

At this stage, Steven Gerrard appears to be the leading candidate to return, having previously guided the club to the 2020/21 league title, though no final decision has been made.

Barry Ferguson in the Frame

Speaking to Ibrox News, Derek Ferguson claimed the decision could go either way:

“The club were likely waiting to see how things went in Europe, but Barry has to be in the conversation. He’s come in with a no-nonsense attitude and speaks very well. With the additions of Billy Dodds and Neil McCann—two coaches with deep knowledge of Scottish football—he’s put together a staff that makes sense.”

“He’s managed the dressing room well and the fans have really connected with his passion, which has given the players a lift. He deserves to be taken seriously. That said, it’s still probably a 50-50 call.”

Supporters remain divided on whether Barry should be handed the role permanently. While he’s brought more unity to the squad and masterminded a memorable penalty shootout win over Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in the Europa League last 16, his overall track record is still limited.

With that in mind, Rangers may opt for someone with a proven winning pedigree. Mourinho, for example, brings a glittering CV filled with major honours including two Champions League titles. Gerrard, though less decorated, is a more seasoned figure than Ferguson and may view a return as a chance to finish what he started.

Barry Ferguson remains a well-liked figure at Ibrox, but if the club want to seriously challenge Celtic and build for the long term, they’ll need to consider all their options carefully.
