Rangers winger Vaclav Černý is at the centre of a major disciplinary storm following the aftermath of Sunday’s heated Old Firm derby against Celtic, with the Czech international now facing a potential two-year ban from all football-related activities.

The 26-year-old was captured on video appearing to spit water in the direction of Celtic fans during a tense moment late in the match at Ibrox, an incident that has sparked outrage across the Scottish football community. The footage, which quickly circulated on social media, appears to show Černý walking toward the touchline before turning toward the away section and forcefully spitting a stream of water toward the stands.

While Rangers won the derby 2-1 thanks to a late goal from Todd Cantwell, Černý’s actions have overshadowed the result, prompting the Scottish FA to open a formal investigation into the incident. Sources close to the disciplinary committee have confirmed that Černý could be charged with gross misconduct and bringing the game into disrepute, which carries a maximum penalty of a two-year ban.

This isn’t the first time Černý has found himself under scrutiny this season. The former FC Twente and Ajax man was previously reprimanded for a tunnel altercation with an opposing player following a league clash with Hearts in February. On that occasion, he received a one-match suspension and was warned about his future conduct.

In a statement released late Monday evening, Rangers acknowledged the ongoing investigation but stopped short of defending their player’s behaviour. “Rangers Football Club is aware of the footage involving Vaclav Černý during Sunday’s match. The club takes these matters seriously and is cooperating fully with the Scottish FA as part of their inquiry.”

Celtic, meanwhile, have issued a strongly worded response, calling for “firm and fair” punishment. “There is no place in our game for such unsporting and disrespectful behaviour,” a Celtic spokesperson said. “The safety and dignity of all fans must be paramount.”

The incident has drawn a wave of criticism from pundits and former professionals. Ex-Celtic captain Scott Brown labelled Černý’s alleged actions as “shameful,” adding on a Sky Sports panel: “This goes beyond rivalry—it’s basic decency. If proven, a lengthy ban would be fully justified.”

Černý, who joined Rangers last summer in a high-profile £4.5 million move, has enjoyed a mixed debut season in Glasgow, registering seven goals and four assists in all competitions but struggling for consistency. The latest controversy could now derail both his season and long-term future at Ibrox.

Sources within the club suggest that manager Philippe Clement is “disappointed” by the winger’s actions, with internal disciplinary measures also being discussed. Černý has yet to issue a public statement, though he is expected to meet with Rangers officials and legal representatives later this week.

With Scottish football authorities pledging a swift verdict, all eyes now turn to Hampden Park, where the fate of one of the Premiership’s most polarising figures hangs in the balance. Should the ban be confirmed, it would mark one of the most severe punishments handed down in recent Scottish football history.
