In the unpredictable and often wild landscape of Scottish football, little comes as a shock to Rangers or Celtic supporters.

The Old Firm rivalry always sparks debate, and earlier this year, Kris Boyd stirred the pot by suggesting Rangers should swoop in for one of Celtic’s key players.

Boyd believes Rangers should target Greg Taylor, with the Scotland international’s contract due to expire at Celtic Park at the end of the season.

He’s not alone in that view—former Rangers defender Craig Moore also floated the idea of signing Taylor as the Ibrox club looks to strengthen ahead of the new campaign.

Although the suggestion hasn’t been warmly received by either fanbase, one Celtic star is adamant that Taylor is among Europe’s elite.

Greg Taylor hailed as ‘Europe’s best’ by Celtic skipper

Celtic captain Callum McGregor believes that if Rangers did sign Greg Taylor, they’d be getting “Europe’s best inverted full-back.”

McGregor also urged Taylor to extend his stay at Parkhead, especially with Kieran Tierney expected to return this summer.

“I’ve spoken about Greg before, and I speak to him regularly—I know just how valuable he is to this team,” McGregor told STV Sport.

“There aren’t many players across Europe who play the inverted full-back role better than him. He adds something completely different to our setup.

“He’s fully committed every day, is a leader in the dressing room, sets the tone, and takes responsibility.

“I’d love to see the club secure him on a new deal. He’s been crucial to our success, particularly since we’ve adopted the inverted full-back system, and I honestly don’t see anyone in Europe doing it better right now.

“He’s a top-quality player and deserves to stay.”

Taylor seen as an upgrade on Rangers’ current left-backs

Kris Boyd has also stated that Taylor has clearly outperformed Rangers’ current options at left-back—Ridvan Yilmaz and Jefte.

Speaking to Sun Sport, Boyd argued Taylor offers more consistency and impact than the Ibrox pair, both of whom have had mixed fortunes in Glasgow.

“He’s shown over a long period that he’s the better player,” Boyd said. “Whether or not he signs a new contract remains to be seen, but if he’s available on a free, you’d have to at least ask the question.”
