Rangers Takeover by 49ers Enterprises Nearing Completion
The 49ers Enterprises group is closing in on acquiring a controlling stake in Rangers, with the American consortium reportedly in the final stages of completing the deal. According to a joint statement, “productive talks” were held last week between both parties.
Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe, key figures from the group, were recently seen touring Ibrox, with the transaction expected to be finalised this summer.
Doubts Over Marathe’s Involvement Ahead of Old Firm Derby
As Rangers prepare for the upcoming Old Firm clash on 4 May—with the title race already decided—a report in the Daily Record (2 May, p.48) reveals that Cavenagh is expected to be present for the match and is likely to become a regular figure at Ibrox next season.
However, questions remain over the involvement of Paraag Marathe, who recently assumed the role of chairman at Leeds United following their promotion to the Premier League. His growing responsibilities at the Yorkshire club may limit his availability in Scotland.
The Record states: “It is understood that [Cavenagh] will be in the directors’ box again on Sunday and the expectation is he’ll be a regular next season. But it remains to be seen if Paraag Marathe will be quite as prominent a face. He is a long-serving 49ers exec but has branched out responsibilities lately, having taken over as chairman of Leeds where he’ll have plenty on his hands after promotion.”
Rangers Shouldn’t Be Concerned by Marathe’s Possible Absence
Supporters needn’t be worried if Marathe isn’t frequently present at Ibrox. His trust in Cavenagh and sporting director Gretar Steinsson—an experienced figure with previous roles at Everton, Spurs, and now Leeds—suggests the club is in capable hands.
Marathe may simply choose to focus on Leeds, while delegating Rangers’ affairs to trusted associates. The club faces pressing challenges, including the uncertain future of interim boss Barry Ferguson and expected summer interest in players like Hamza Igamane and Nicolas Raskin.
The 49ers group will need to work diligently to retain key talent and revamp a squad that’s failed to meet expectations. Whether or not Marathe is visibly involved, the structural backing appears solid.
