Norwich City’s confirmation that Angus Gunn will depart Carrow Road this summer has likely caught the attention of several clubs — Rangers included.
The Scotland international is set to leave when his contract runs out in the coming weeks and is expected to attract plenty of interest.
Journalist Derek Clark has encouraged Rangers to pursue Gunn, whether as their new number one or as a strong backup to current starter Jack Butland.
This comes amid uncertainty surrounding Liam Kelly’s future at Ibrox, with the goalkeeper hinting he may leave if not guaranteed regular playing time next season.
Gunn seen as strong competition for Butland at Rangers
Gunn’s connection to Rangers is clear, given his Scotland ties and the fact that Butland’s performances have dipped significantly in recent months.
Derek Ferguson, brother of Rangers boss Barry Ferguson, believes Gunn would be a smart signing — potentially an upgrade on Kelly.
Speaking to Ibrox News, Ferguson said: “He’s a Scotland international — why not?
“Butland has lost his place under Barry, which is fair. You can’t keep making mistakes. Liam Kelly’s a decent keeper, but is he really first-choice quality? I’m not convinced. Gunn could come in and really contribute. I’d take him.”
Rangers face a big summer rebuild
While a new goalkeeper may not be at the top of Rangers’ shopping list, it’s certainly on the radar.
With a major squad overhaul expected this summer — several arrivals and likely even more departures — signing a proven, experienced keeper like the 29-year-old Gunn on a free could be a smart early move.
Add in continued speculation linking Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland with a Bosman move to Ibrox, and Rangers appear to be laying the foundations for a much-needed rebuild.
Of course, closing the gap on Celtic will require more than just a few key signings, but this could mark an encouraging start after a difficult season.
